Exploring the Other Island: A Seasonal Guide to Nature on Long Island
Published in Paperback by Waterline Books (May, 1994)
Author: John L. Turner
Average review score:

A must have for Long Islanders and others.
John Turner is the most informed Naturalist I've had the priviledge to be acquainted with. He shares with the reader a lifetime of adventure and exploration through all the seasons on Long Island, and, supplies so much explicit information within the 190 plus pages of this book it is almost overwhelming. Accompanying John on one of his many treks into the true wilds of this mostly Suburban environment is the only way to obtain a better understanding of nature.

Discover the natural treats of Long Island
Where can you find a native cactus? When do the alewives run? What carnivorous plant grows wild in Quogue? John Turner's book is a wonderful guide to the delights of Long Island. The hiker, cyclist, birdwatcher or kayaker will all find this book insightful and informative. This is an excellent gift for yourself or a friend.

The Falklands War: Myth and Countermyth
Published in Hardcover by Palgrave Macmillan (November, 1998)
Author: David Monaghan
Average review score:

A superb behind the scenes analysis
The peace process in El Salvador was very difficult to understand for outsiders, even Salvadorans like me. This book succeeds in claryfing not only the actual events, but also the underlying motives and incentives for each of the parties involved.

The book begins with a good historical analysis, which puts into perspective all the decisions taken during the actual peace negotiations. Once the historical motivation is clear, the actual strategies for the negotiation begin to make perfect sense.

All in all, this book really shines at explaining the underlying interests of the parties and the tactics they resorted to in achieving a truly remarkable agreement.

The Inside Story of the Salvadoran Peace Process
This book is an excellent study of the behind-the-scenes policy making during the Salvadoran peace process. The author obviously had access to many of the persons involved in the process. It is also lacks the left-wing bias found in much of the U.S. literature on El Salvador. I recommend this book for anyone interested in the Salvadoran Civil War as well as for those who study the topic of negotiated settlements to civil conflicts.

Farewell to the Island
Published in Hardcover by HarperCollins (October, 1998)
Author: Gloria Whelan
Average review score:

A wonderful second book
The year is 1816 and the war between England and the United States is finally over. Mary is now a vibrant young woman at sixteen, not the young girl we first met in ONCE ON THE ISLAND. For the first time in her life Mary is leaving her beloved island of Mackinac and traveling to London to visit her sister Angelique.
While on the steemer, Comfort, Mary meets a young man named James Lindsey who captures her interest. On her arrival in London, Mary finds herself in a society that she has never known. Many surprises are in store for Mary in London, but the biggest of all is the fact that James Lindsey is no other than Lord Lindsey, son of the Duke of Oakbridge. As the two of them grow closer in their fondness for eachother Mary finds she must make a hard decision. Can she give up her hard life on her beloved island for the life of London society with James? Can she give up all the people she loves, including White Hawk, who Mary still has feelings for? A second wonderful novel by Gloria Whelan. I enjoyed this even more than the first one!

Great book
FAREWELL TO THE ISLAND is a wonderful sequal to ONCE ON THIS ISLAND which was set on a Great Lakes island in Michagin during the War of 1812. It's 1816, and the war is over. 16 year old Mary O'Shea is sailing to England, to visit her older sister, Angelique, who married a British soldier who had been stationed on the island during the war. As Mary grows closer to the people she meets there, she must decide on which island her heart belongs - The island of Great Britain, where a young Lord has proposed marriage to her, or on the island of Michalmackinac, the island she was born on, ths island she calls home?

Fatu-Hiva : back to nature
Published in Unknown Binding by Allen & Unwin ()
Author: Thor Heyerdahl
Average review score:

Wonderful
This is a wonderful book that I recieved as a gift from my grandfather. I will always treasure it. It not only tells of Thor Heyerdahl's adventure, but also describes the culture he visits. The book encourages me to follow my own dreams no matter how unusual they may be.

Thor Heyerdahl's one year adventure in Fatu Hiva
This book is more than just an adventure. It is a young man's awakening to his own ideas, his inspriations and would greatly influence his later travels. It is highly illustrated and higly reccomended. I first read it when I first arrived in my own sailboat many years ago at Hanavae Bay. We read aloud from the book as our boat arrived in Fatu Hiva and we visited all the sites that he mentioned in the book. Yes, they really do exist!

But when I reread the story I am also captivated by the love and devotion of his wife Liv. Imagine she married Thor and for their honeymoon they travel to Fatu Hiva to live in the jungle. Such devotion! This is a great adventure novel for both men and women. I cannot believe that it is out of print for now. His words are as exhilirating now as they were when I first read them years ago. On this island Thor saw the remarkable resemblence to the massive stone carvings on Fatu Hiva and to the stone carvings on Easter Island. This adventure would be the one that helped him form his theory of native peoples from South Amercia travelling to the Marquesas not from Polynesia.

A Fiddle for Angus
Published in Hardcover by Tundra Books (September, 2001)
Authors: Budge Wilson and Susan Tooke
Average review score:

If you love music...
There is something very magical about a child's first connection -- not exposure, mind you, but real connection -- with music. Children's writer Budge Wilson captures the feeling, as well as the frustration children can feel while grappling with techniques beyond their abilities.

The art is realistic and appealing
Ages 6-9 will find A Fiddle For Angus to be a captivating story of a young boy's determination to learn the fiddle. Susan Tooke's art is realistic and appealing as they tell of a young boy born into a musical family who learns how to participate.

The Fight for the 'Malvinas': The Argentine Forces in the Falklands War
Published in Hardcover by Viking Press (March, 1992)
Author: Martin Middlebrook
Average review score:

A Rare and Valuable Glimpse Into the Argentine Perspective
Prior to the publication of this book there were important gaps and inaccuracies in our understanding of the battles for the Falkland Islands. Did Argentinian troops intentionally fire upon a British officer attempting negotiation under a white flag at Goose Green? Were Royal Marines successful in their ambush of Argentinian armored vehicles during the initial invasion? Was the Argentinian Air Force commanded by a fanatical maniac out to establish his service as the dominant domestic political force? The surprising answer to all these question is No, and in a careful and touchingly human review of the activities and decisions of Argentinian forces Middlebrook reveals the tragic gap that developed between Argentinian political leaders and the troops and officers given the difficult task of defending the islands without adequate support as winter closed in. The junta's colossal mistake of assuming the UK would not fight for the Falklands led to the isolation, suffering, and defeat of the occupation forces and, while ultimately setting the stage for democracy in Argentina, seared a painful wound into the soul of a country already carrying conscious of past failures. Middlebrook's access to Argentinian commanders, troops, and families helps reveal the complex social and political landscape of a country which still sees the "Malvinas" in terms of classical European colonialism. It also reveals the operational planning and situational understanding of air and land commanders at critical points in the conflict. Students of this subject will recognize the author as a highly accomplished battle historian.

Excellent and Interesting Account
Martin Middlebrook has once again shown why he is one of the best British authors covering military history. His masterful account of the Falklands, 'Operation Corporate' now has a companion volume, this time covering the war from the Argentinian point of view. The book is well told and is a delight to read and only one of very few covering this war from the 'other side'. You really have to give it to the pilots flying their aircraft against the Britsh Fleet, they had guts, they knew what they were in for but continued with their mission. This is a great story, if you can get a copy do so, you wont be disappointed!

The Fishes of the Galapagos Islands
Published in Hardcover by Stanford Univ Pr (October, 1997)
Authors: Robert J. Lavenberg, Jack Stein Grove, and Jean-Michel Cousteau
Average review score:

Most comprehensive catalog of galapagos fish
Drawing on more than 20 years of first hand research and collecting, as well as historical and contemporary data, this is a most comprehensive catalog of the fishes found in the waters surrounding the Galapagos Islands. Filling a void in the study of the Galapagos, this volume demonstrates that the marine life is as varied, unusual, & unique as the land animals which have been so well documented. 437 fish are included with 41 being unique to the region. For each species there is a general description, natural history, habitat, range and size. There is a b/w drawing or photo of most species plus 150 excellent color photos, most showing a live fish in its habitat. To assist future visitors in using the book as an identification guide, a description of prime diving sites is included. This book will prove to be invaluable to the student of the Galapagos environment or of fishes in general.

The only comprehensive review of Galapagos fishes.
This book is the result of over 20 years of research by the authors in the Galapagos Islands, including ten by Dr. Grove while he worked in the marine reserve as a naturalist and researcher. Over 400 species are reviewed which include the vast majority of those known to be found at the time of the manuscript's going to press. Unlike simple field guides, this volume provides interesting aspects of the natural history of most species in addition to accurate illustrations. Not only is this book an absolute must for anyone interested in the marine life of the Galapagos, but also an invaluable reference tool for those interested in the fish life of the tropical east Pacific.

Fishes of the Pacific Coast: Alaska to Peru, Including the Gulf of California and the Galapagos Islands

Fishes of the Pacific Coast by Gar Goodson
Fishes of the Pacific Coast is an excellent reference guide with beautiful full color illustrations of approximately 450 fish. I truly appreciated the inclusion of the fish of the upper Sea of Cortez. Small ecological and historical blurbs are fascinating. The handbook size makes it a must have on your diving or fishing boat.

An excellent handbook for identifying fishes of the Pacific.
As a volunteer for the new Long Beach (CA) Aquarium of the Pacific, I needed to quickly learn about fishes of the Pacific coast and how to identify them. This book exactly suits my needs. It is interesting and informative, without being too technical. The color illustrations are beautiful. This is the perfect book for anyone who wants to learn more about Pacific coast fishes.

This book is excellent!
Shona, who lives on a remote island off Scotland meets a new laird's son one day, and the story leads on from there...

Simple yet powerful story of physically handicapped girl
Very powerfully written story that focuses on an intelligent young girl who's trapped inside a body that's unresponsive. It skilfully weaves the isolation of the island with Shona's isolation and adds in some interesting sub plots. Our ten and eleven year olds found it particularly moving as it covers subject matter not normally found in books for young adults. Highly recommended for young adults and their parents.
